International Yoga Day is meant to be a worldwide recognition of yoga practices, an Indian tradition that’s over 6000 years old and one that has taken much of the Western world by storm. Last year, International Yoga Day was recognized by the United Nations, with June 21 marking the celebrations.
As an area rich in both Indian culture and our own spins on yoga, Vancouver would seem like the perfect place to host a celebration of yoga. It was not to be – the proposed event was mired in controversy from the start, with Premier Christy Clark’s proposal to close the Burrard Bridge for seven hours drawing ire from various groups. For one thing, the expected cost of the closing would be around $150,000. For another, the event falls on National Aboriginal Day, a coincidence that nonetheless caused several groups to threaten demonstrations against it.
For yoga aficionados, there are still other ways to participate in International Yoga Day. Litha Fest, a celebration of yoga and the summer solstice, is running on the 21st at Ferndale Farms in Mission. The day will feature a variety of events including yoga, meditation, food trucks, live music and more. No experience is necessary to attend and all ages are welcome. The festival runs from 12:00 to 3:45 pm and tickets are available at ironlotusyoga.com. It promises to be a fun and enlightening alternative to the Burrard Street fiasco!
