“Life is a series of moments. The quality of attention and action that we bring to each moment determines the quality of our lives.” – Dan Millman

Have you ever experienced a life-changing moment?

Of course you have. We all have, even if you didn’t realize it at the time.

How do I know? Because for as long and crazy a journey as life can be, it’s really nothing more than a series of moments – each one sculpting and shaping us ever so slightly. Ultimately, it’s this collection of little moments over our life that define who we are and how we live.

Sure, it’s strange to think that a simple moment in time – something so small and fleeting – can have such a profound effect on us. But when you think about it, it makes so much sense. Our brains couldn’t possibly remember everything we experience on any given day. So instead, it focuses on those few moments of pure importance. The moments your brain knows will have a lasting effect on you for years to come.

Put simply, moments are life’s currency, and the way to truly be “rich” in this life is to accumulate as many of these moments as you can.

That is why I love travel with all my soul. It’s one of the few things in life where you can engineer these life-changing moments. Where you can intentionally combine all the ingredients needed to create that special spark of a moment that truly matters. A moment that will transform you forever.

But not all travel is created equal. While I encourage everyone to get out there and explore this big beautiful world in whatever way they can, there is a growing style of travel that is specifically focused on creating these special moments: Transformational Travel.

Transformational travel is intentionally traveling to stretch, learn and grow into new ways of being and engaging with the world. And as someone that’s been fortunate enough to have taken many transformational journeys, I will tell you first-hand that as soon as you experience travel like this, there is no looking back.

That’s why I am so excited to announced that I have been accepted into the 2020 Transformational Travel Designer Program. This in-depth, immersive three-month program will connect me with an entire community of Transformational Travel Designers, and provide me with the tools and framework to better build experiences and travel adventures that are conscious, compassionate, and rich with life-defining moments.

And the best part? When complete, I’ll be able to share these experiences with you!

What is Transformational Travel?

Transformational Travel is a movement I’ve been passionate about for years. At its core, it focuses on being intentional when we travel, selecting places and experiences specifically for their ability to generate those moments that help us stretch, learn, and grow.

For many, travel serves as a means to forget about the world. To sit on a beach, shut off email, and spend the day sipping away on a piña colada. While there is nothing wrong with sipping a fruity drink with an umbrella while your toes dig in the sand, this style of travel almost never serves to open us up to new experiences and worldviews.

Transformational Travel on the other hand is about engaging with the world – or more specifically, a part of the world you’ve never experienced. It’s about changing the way we view our relationships, our ecological footprint, our consumer choices, our social purpose, and ultimately, our impact on this world.

While Transformational Travel can look different to everyone, The Transformational Travel Council distills it down into three critical parts:

  1. Traveling with intention, openness, and mindfulness
  2. Engaging in challenging physical and/or cultural experiences
  3. Taking time for personal reflection and meaning-making

By bringing these three parts together, wanderers following the Transformational Travel protocol increase the likelihood that they’ll have that life-changing travel experience, and create those moments and memories that will stay with them forever.

Why is Transformational Travel So Important?

We live in an incredible time. The world has never been smaller, and with a few swipes on your phone you can learn almost anything you’ve ever wanted to know about any nation on earth. And if you are so inclined, a few more swipes and you can book yourself a ticket to travel there.

While the flow of information and dramatic increase in travel options has made it easier than ever to navigate the globe, there has been an unintended consequence of the digital era of travel: we’ve stopped being present in our travels. For many, the reward of traveling somewhere new and exciting has shifted away from the experience we have in a new place to the experience we have saying we’ve been to a new place. Treasures of the world that used to take our breath away have been relegated to nothing more than Instagram backdrops.

As the saying goes: if it’s not on the ‘gram, did it really happen?

Don’t get me wrong…I LOVE taking photos of my travels, and I love Instagram too. But Transformation Travel ensures that photography and social media are simply tools to remember your journey, and not the basis of the entire journey itself. It takes us back to an era pre-smartphones and pre-internet, when travel dripped with adventure, and there was nothing to distract you from immersing yourself in local culture.

And this culture of immersion and world of adventure is what Transformational Travel aims to bring back.

What Is The Program?

Launching in April, the Transformational Travel Council’s Traveler Design Program is a three-month program that’s one-part educational course, one-part action tank, and created specifically for travel professionals like myself. It’s been engineered by the leadership at the Transformation Travel Council to give us cohort members a much better understanding and framework on how to design Transformational Travel experiences for those we reach.

Throughout the program, I will be immersed into lessons and real-life scenarios in areas such as:

  • Transformational Travel Tools
  • Understanding the Traveler’s Journey
  • Embodying a Transformational Travel Persona
  • Implementing the Transformational Travel Council’s Guiding Practices
  • Understanding our Impact as Travelers
  • Designing Transformational Journeys for Others

Once complete, I will leave the program with a robust toolkit for building Transformation Travel experiences, and will be able to show others how to experience the kind of travel that truly matters.

What This Means for You

If you’ve spent any time at all reading my blogs or following me on social media, you should already know that I’ve always made it a point to travel with intention. To be present where I go. To ensure that my family and I immerse ourselves in local cultures and experiences. This is the type of travel I have always loved, and why I am such an avid proponent of the Transformational Travel movement.

With the completion of the Transformational Travel Council’s Traveler Design Program, for the first time in my life I will not only have a love for this style of travel, but a framework and toolkit for helping others learn to love it as well. My aim is to give readers like you a much better understanding of how to build these types of Transformational Travel experiences for yourself. Places to go. Experiences to uncover. Things to look for to ensure you’re traveling with purpose.

Ultimately, my goal is to give you moments. Those little flashes of light that, although fleeting, will stick with you forever. Perhaps it’s the look on your spouse’s face the first time you hear a Muslim call to prayer. The wide eyes of your son as the ancient ruins come into sight. The laughs from your daughter as she takes an authentic Spanish Flamenco lesson.

Whatever your appetite for adventure may be, I am here to be your guide. Because as someone that’s experienced the magic of Transformational Travel first-hand, I know all too well that these experiences are far too powerful not to share.

And I cannot wait to start sharing transformational adventures with you.
