Discover French Polynesia
Where turquoise lagoons meet volcanic peaks and the pace of life is set by the tide.

French Polynesia is made up of 118 islands and atolls and some of the most iconic and dramatic landscapes on the planet — from the jagged black peaks of Moorea to the glassy, shark-filled lagoons of Taha’a.

The famous overwater bungalows of Bora Bora are as jaw-dropping in person as they are in photographs. And the moment you slip beneath the surface of these warm, clear waters — snorkelling with rays and reef sharks, or diving the pristine passes of the Tuamotu Atolls — you'll understand why travellers return again and again.

Dance, art, tattooing, and music are vibrant and very much alive here — and the local markets, festivals, and community gatherings offer a genuine window into the Mā'ohi way of life.

Hike the lush interior valleys of Tahiti or Nuku Hiva. Kayak the flat blue waters of an atoll lagoon at sunrise. Freedive with humpback whales during their annual migration season. Spend long, golden afternoons at a beachside fare watching the light shift across the water.

Must-visit islands in French Polynesia
There is no single "right" way to experience French Polynesia. You might fall completely in love with one island and never want to leave — or you might find yourself planning a return trip to hop between as many as possible. Here are some highlights to spark your imagination.
Bora Bora

Few places in the world carry the kind of mythic reputation that Bora Bora does — and the real thing does not disappoint. The iconic Mount Otemanu rises sharply above a lagoon that cycles through every shade of blue you can imagine. This is where the overwater bungalow was born, and where the fantasy of a perfect tropical escape feels entirely within reach. Snorkel with black-tipped reef sharks and stingrays in the shallows, take a sunset sail around the island, or simply sit on your deck and let the water beneath you do its work.

Moorea

Just a short ferry ride or quick flight from Papeete, Moorea feels like Tahiti's wilder, more adventurous sibling. Its dramatic mountain peaks and deep bays are best explored on two wheels or on foot — and the views from the Belvedere lookout over Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay are among the finest in all of French Polynesia. Swim with spinner dolphins in the morning, hike through pineapple fields in the afternoon, and pull up a stool at a local roulotte (food truck) for dinner. Moorea rewards the curious traveller.

Tahiti

As the largest island and your gateway to French Polynesia, Tahiti is often overlooked in favour of its more glamorous neighbours. That's a mistake. Tahiti's interior valleys, black sand beaches, and powerful surf breaks tell a different story than the postcard images — and the capital, Papeete, hums with local life, a vibrant market, and some of the best French-Polynesian food you'll find anywhere. Use Tahiti as your launchpad, but give it at least a couple of days on its own terms.

Fakarava (Tuamotu Atolls)

For those who came to be in the water, Fakarava is the destination. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve atoll is widely considered one of the world's premier dive destinations, with shark dives in the South Pass that border on the surreal — hundreds of grey reef sharks patrolling the current as you drift through. Above the surface, the flat atoll landscape, turquoise lagoon, and the staggering silence of the place are an experience in their own right.

The Marquesas Islands

Remote, raw, and unforgettable. The Marquesas Islands rise steeply from the ocean — there are no lagoons here, just crashing surf against volcanic rock and jungle-covered valleys where ancient stone tikis still stand. This is a destination for those seeking depth: the cultural traditions, the tattooing heritage, the traditional dance, the scale of the landscapes. The biannual Marquesas Arts Festival is one of the most authentic and extraordinary cultural celebrations in the Pacific. Getting here is an adventure in itself — and that's exactly the point.

Huahine

Huahine is what Bora Bora might have looked like before the world discovered it — lush, quiet, and genuinely local. Ancient marae (ceremonial temples) sit hidden among the banana trees and vanilla plantations. The lagoon is spectacular and largely uncrowded. The local community is warm and proud of its traditions. If you want to experience French Polynesia at its most unhurried and authentic, Huahine is your island.
