Are you looking for the best Fairmont Orchid review?
Great news, you’ve come to the right place. After our recent family visit to the Island of Hawaiʻi, I’m here to share all the behind-the-scenes photos and insights in this candid Fairmont Orchid review. I’m not going to lie, this resort has been on my vision board for 4+ years, so I was hoping that it lived up to everything I had dreamed of.
Spoiler Alert: This island property exceeded our expectations. From the moment you walked through the sun-soaked lobby and looked out onto the oceanfront oasis, you felt the spirit of aloha embrace your mind and welcome you to a truly special experience. After settling into our oceanfront suite, we toured the resort grounds, mapped out all the activities we would take part in, and the adventures we would explore. From snorkelling with the local honu (turtles) to wiggling our toes in the sand as dinner was served at Hale Kai Restaurant, The Fairmont Orchid was a sequence of experiences for the senses and a family vacation that served our souls.

Fairmont Orchid Hawaiʻi Location

The Fairmont Orchid is located on the Kohala Coast, on the northwest coast of the Island of Hawaiʻi. With its 10,000 square foot oceanfront pool that looks out over the Pauoa Bay, the resort wraps itself around the Keanapukalua shoreline and invites you to find a cozy spot to settle in and embrace the rhythm and spirit that is uniquely Hawaiʻi.
Perfectly positioned on 32 acres along the black-lava coast, the Fairmont has 540 rooms, offering ocean, pool, golf course, or garden views. With a private lagoon that has local turtles and fish swimming by as you snorkel, to water activities like paddle boarding and traditional Hawaiʻian canoe tour, to of course, sand castle building (all while being served treats on the beach), this is where vacation adventures and rejuvenation collide. Set under a skyline of swaying palm trees, the Fairmont Orchid also has a spa (without walls, more on that later), 5 restaurants, and a golf course, all of which are connected with intricate tropical gardens including waterfalls and elaborate water features.
Leadership in Sustainability

Sustainability is the core of the work we do at Adventure Awaits, so it’s only fitting that when we’re looking to partner with organizations, we ensure their commitment to leadership in creating a greener future is top-notch. The Fairmont Orchid has its Green Key Global certification, which highlights its efforts in energy conservation, waste management, community engagement, and ensuring an eco-friendly experience for its guests. I was happy to hear about the Fairmont Orchid’s leadership in sustainability and see it in action during our stay. Here are some of the initiatives that you can seek out when visiting the Fairmont, ensuring your vacation is as eco-friendly as possible:
- Reusable Water Bottles – As soon as you enter your room, you’ll be greeted with a brand new and beautiful reusable water bottle, which can be refilled at stations throughout the hotel. Imagine how much energy and waste would be produced if everyone used single-use water bottles. Being that the Big Island is exactly that, an island, this is an easy way to reduce the amount of waste you generate on holidays.
- Resident Honey Bees – When dining at one of the restaurants, you’ll see kiawe honey on the menu, which is produced on site by one of the local hives. With 80,000 bees that call the Fairmont home, it’s worth taking a tour to learn more about the botanical bees and the Chef’s Garden.
- Ocean Education – Upon your arrival, you’ll be given the schedule for the week, which includes a variety of educational sessions where you can learn about the ecosystems that surround the property. Bring your questions to the Hui Holokai Beach Ambassador, who will teach you about the fish, turtles, and Mother Ocean that surrounds the island.
- Reef Friendly Sunscreen – A small act that means so much, the Fairmont provides reef-safe sunscreen for guests. Reef-friendly sunscreen protects you from the UV and helps preserve Hawaiʻi’s underwater ecosystems.
Guest Rooms

A name synonymous with luxury, the Fairmont brand is world-renowned for delivering ultimate guest experiences, and we were all swooning with excitement once we opened the doors to our ocean view suite. Actual squeals of excitement as we ran through the room, bopping back and forth between the lanai views and the room amenities. With the smell of orchids mixed with fresh saltwater air, crisp linens, and tropical fruit, this was the start of a stay we would never forget.
Fairmont Guest Rooms

The Fairmont Orchid recently upgraded its guest rooms, elevating the design and comfort. With modern upgrades on decor and design, the rooms are fresh and inviting, all while maintaining the classic elegance traditionally found within Fairmont properties. After a day of sun seeking around the resort, you can settle into a comfortable home-like setting with Hawaiʻian decor, luxe linens, and small touches of comfort that combine to make a big impact. The bathrooms are always my favourite, with classic white marble and oversized in nature, they invite you to soak in the tub for a while and rinse off afterwards with their waterfall shower.
Traveller Tip: Don’t pack your shampoo, indulge in the heavenly scents of the Fairmont-branded products they provide.
Fairmont Orchid Rooms
The Fairmont Orchid has a variety of room combinations that can suit your party size and budget. From standard king rooms to two queen rooms to accessible rooms, each are generous in size at 522 square meters, giving you the space you need. If you’re looking to splurge, be sure to book an ocean-front room, or if you’re looking to save a little on rooms, book a garden view.
Fairmont Orchid Suites

We were surprised to be invited to stay in one of their one-bedroom, oceanfront suites. With two lanais, a large living room with a pull-out couch, and two bathrooms, it was as welcoming inside the room as it was appealing to get outside and explore! A definite splurge for a family budget, this is something we could consider investing in, as it gave us all ample room to spread out and settle in after our big adventure-filled days. Having a private lanai in the bedroom and a larger gathering one for our whole family added special gathering moments, both at sunrise and moonrise.
Adventure Seeker Tip: Be sure to spend some time outside after dark, looking up at the skies and soaking in the stars. It’s quite the spectacular show!
Fairmont Orchid Deluxe Ocean View Room

With its horseshoe shape, over 50% of the rooms at the Fairmont Orchid have an ocean view. As Westcoast travellers, we were often up early, allowing us to open up the blinds and soak in the sunrise as she took to the sky. If spending time looking out over Mother Ocean brings you joy, be sure to book an Ocean View Room.
Fairmont Orchid Partial Ocean View Room
Partial view rooms offer all the expected room amenities, but with a different view out your lanai. Whether you’re looking out onto the golf course or their beautifully manicured gardens, many will offer a peek or a partial ocean view. Tip: When you’re walking around the resort, be sure to look for pathways and routes that will take you alongside some of this beautiful scenery. Some of our favourite photos were taken when we stumbled upon a garden with water features and a bridge! Be sure to check the water for koi fish too!
Fairmont Gold Review at Fairmont Orchid
In November 2024, the Fairmont Gold Experience at The Fairmont Orchid was under renovation. The sixth floor is exclusively reserved for Fairmont Gold rooms, and they were under construction, as were the shared amenities that are offered to Fairmont Gold Guests.
If you haven’t experienced Fairmont Gold, it’s definitely something worth researching to see if it offers value to your visit. Fairmont Gold is an exclusive “hotel with a hotel” experience where you get to enjoy amenities and elevated experiences only for Fairmont Gold guests. This includes:
- Fairmont Gold Rooms – Elevated rooms and in-room amenities.

There’s always healthy snacks available along with a shared selection of delectable treats, and beverages (for all ages).
- Complimentary Breakfast & Afternoon Canapes – This is where the value in upgrading to Fairmont Gold can really be beneficial. The meals at Fairmont Gold are buffet-style canapes with a wide variety of options to choose from. Locally sourced and chef-inspired meals are fueling and delicious, and worth investing in if you enjoy this style of eating.
- All Day Honour Bar – You don’t have to order room service or stock your in-room bar, just head down to the lounge and get what you want… and kids, this means you too, as they offer a variety of mocktails!
- Dedicated Concierge – Need help with taking your trip to the next level?… The Fairmont Gold team is there to assist!

Fairmont Orchid Activities

The Fairmont Orchid rooms are an incredible experience themselves, and lounging on the lanai could equate to the perfect vacation in itself, but the hotel will present you with a problem… what to do first! With oceanside pools, a private lagoon, an action-centred Beach Club, a robust fitness program, and an on-site activity planner, there is so much to do and explore during your stay!
Resort Tour

Once you’ve settled into your room, take a tour of the resort, you’re sure to find things that will surprise you! We had spotted the pool and beach, but behind the resort, there was a stadium-style tennis court! Tour the grounds to get acquainted and start to plan out where you will explore first.
Fairmont Orchid Pool

Designed with space and flow in mind, the 10,000 square foot Fairmont Orchid pool invites you to make a splash. I felt like it had 5 pools within the larger pool, all connected and yet each giving you space to move around without bumping into other guests. With an adult-only section, families had a place to play all while not disturbing those who were looking for quieter lounging.
The pool is surrounded by cabanas and hales, which are available to rent if you’re looking to take your pool party to another level. We opted for the free lounge chairs, which were luxury in themselves and barely used as my kids were too busy trying to chase Dad around the pool. We all appreciated the poolside service and the fun mocktail drinks and snacks that our server delivered right to our chairs! They say this is “island-style” relaxation at the Fairmont Orchid pool, and it was definitely something we loved getting used to!
Fairmont Orchid Lagoon

The Fairmont Orchid has a private and protected lagoon that sits on the edge of Pauoa Bay. To be honest, this is where our family spent most of our time during our Hawaiʻi vacation. With beach chairs for us to use, our whole family spent the day going back and forth between hanging out in the sun and snorkeling.
Snorkeling in the Lagoon

The snorkeling off the beach was incredible each day, because every day was different. From seeing turtles who were coming in for a visit, to yellow damselfish, to triggerfish, to parrotfish. Every hour, the marine life was changing, and we were constantly running in and out of the water to see. One memory that our family keeps going back to is when a huge Jack Fish came swimming up among the guests. At almost 2 feet long, this was a huge fish, and this friendly dude would just swim straight up to people and in between their legs, often scaring them before they’d start giggling. He was so social, like a golden retriever going to say hello to all the swimmers again and again!
Beach Club at the Fairmont Orchid

As soon as you head down to the beach, be sure to go and check out the beach club and the programs that they offer. From SUP to traditional canoe tours, beach volleyball, to educational programming, to just helping you identify fish, the team at the Beach Club is truly next level. They are passionate ambassadors for not only the Fairmont but for the Island of Hawaiʻi, many having worked at the property for 10 or more years. As ambassadors, they love teaching guests about the traditional Hawaiʻian ways of life, language, culture, and how to protect the island and the ocean for generations to come. While we went to many of the Beach Club activities for their advertised programming, we walked away with so much more. Connection. Community. Passion. Purpose.
Fairmont Scheduled Activities & Experiences
When you arrive at the Fairmont Orchid, you’ll get a copy of the weekly activity schedule and each week is uniquely programmed. Here are just some of the complementary activities you can take part in during your stay. I’ll be honest, I can’t list ALL of the activities as they have as there are just too many to cover, so I’m highlighting our family’s favourites for you:
The Arrival of the Sun | Traditional Hawaiʻian Canoe Experience

Hands down, one of our favourite experiences was getting to head out on a traditional canoe on tour with our guide. A Huii Holokai beach ambassador and a true leader of the land, it was incredible to sail “like Moana” out onto the sea and surf the shores as the waves crashed in. We loved it so much that the next morning we headed out before sunrise and took part in their “Arrival of the Sun” tour, where we got to see the sun peek out over the Mauna Kea and the Hawaiʻian Island. My son had brought his snorkel gear and jumped off the boat to see what snorkelling was like out in the bay. Paradise and the perfect way to start a day, one we will forever cherish.
Traditional Tea Leaf Bracelet Making

Gather around on the grass and learn the historic art of tea leaf bracelet making. Enjoy learning about the cultural significance of this practice while you design a beautiful bracelet or anklet.
Mom / Photographer Tip: Take your family photos at sunset after doing the bracelet-making class, as they make for beautiful accessories in your photos and add to the memory.
Hula Leʻa Wale – Hula Lesson
Can you go to Hawaiʻi without a hula lesson? The short answer is no! Learn about the history of the dance that is called “the heartbeat of Hawaiʻi” and take home some new dance skills that will last long after your vacation.
Honu Talk

Walk with a local guide to learn about the local Honu (turtles) that call the beaches of Pauoa Bay home. Normally, the turtles come up on the sand to sleep, and you can often spot them during your stay. Funny enough, there was one time that they were not up on the beach, and of course, that was during our scheduled tour. Fortunately, we had seen them enough on our stay that we still enjoyed the educational insight into the turtles, learning about the different species, their diets, and shoreline routines. I appreciated that this was a short and insightful tour that was accommodating to all ages and accessibility levels.

Fairmont Orchid Spa

Known as the “Spa without Walls,” the Fairmont Orchid Spa has open-air, ocean-front cabanas that will undoubtedly take your spa experience to the next level. Want something a little more private? Sign up for a private waterfall hale (hut) which is surrounded by koi ponds and their beautiful tropical landscape.

Some of their treatments include:
Lomi Lomi – “An ancient Hawaiʻian healing combining aloha, love, pule (blessing), and massage. Lomi Lomi incorporates long rhythmic strokes of the forearms and hands to activate the flor of mana (life force energy) for physical, mental and spiritual well-being.”
Ali’i Royal Experience – “Let us treat you like all’i (Hawaiʻian royalty) as you surrender to the synergized energies of the two most popular Polynesian treatments. “Awe Earth & Fire and Kahinu.”
Hiwa Hiwa – “Our signature Rainforest Essence treatment combines a traditional Lomi Lomi massage with a Hawaiʻian mamaki mud wrap to the lower legs and feet.”
I can’t offer you full Fairmont Orchid Spa Reviews, as it wasn’t something that we invested in. In terms of a review, I do wish the prices weren’t so expensive, but part of that was a result of the weak Canadian dollar and having to add a 40% exchange rate. I can say that I toured around the spa and saw their spa hale’s around the property, and it does look like a unique Hawaiian oasis, and their treatments look like something I’ve never experienced anywhere else.
Fairmont Orchid Hawaiʻi Golf Course (and ways to save)
If you have a golfer in your family, you have to book them a tee time at the Fairmont Orchid Hawaiʻi Golf Course (and I’ll share ways on how to save on green fees below). With 45-holes, the championship Mauna Lani Golf Course offers an oceanside experience with diverse landscape and a unique course setting. Designed to have two distinct 18-hole courses, there is golfing available for all skill levels.
North Course
The 18-hole North course invites you to explore the unique geology of the lava rock, kiawe trees, and oceanside views. The 17th is the most iconic as it is surrounded by lava walls!
South Course
Built on the prehistoric Kaniku lava flow, the 18-hole South course is said to be reigned over by the volcano goddess, Pele. Legend has it that if you’re on good terms with her, your ball will hit the lava and bounce back onto the fairway, but if you’re not, then that ball will be gone forever! On the South course, you can expect to see more mountain views as well as beautiful ocean vistas.
Wikiwiki Course
A shorter 9-hole course, the Wikiwiki course is great for those looking to play a shorter game or for families looking for easier greens to maneuver. This course is suitable for players of all levels.
Golf Prices at Fairmont Golf Course (and ways to save!)
The Fairmont Golf Course offers dynamic pricing, which is adjusted in real time, based on demand. So if you’re looking to save, here are a few tips:
- Book in advance: The earlier you book, the more you save.
- Use your Fairmont discount: Guests of the Fairmont will save 15% off the best rate (at time of check-in).
- Keiki (Kids) Golf Free: Juniors golf for free after 3 pm when they are playing with a paying adult. Kids also get complimentary club rentals and complimentary lessons when taking a lesson with a paying adult.
Fairmont Orchid Hawaiʻi Restaurants

One thing is for sure, you won’t go hungry at the Fairmont Orchid, but after a big day of adventure seeking and sun, it’s great to know that you can settle in for a high-quality, locally sourced, delicious and delectable meal. As a family with lots of allergies and intolerances, I was especially grateful to the team for their sincere compassion and care that they offered us while we were ordering our meals. Being able to indulge in the incredible food all while feeling safe and secure helped ease my worries and allowed me to relax and truly enjoy the dining experience.
Hale Kai Restaurant

The soft sound of Hawaiʻian music drifted through the air as we walked in the sand towards our table. As an ocean front restaurant, Hale Kai offered us the perfect family setting, our toes literally in the sand while we dissected the mocktail menu and decided what to indulge in first. The kids loved the North American menu with casual options like burgers and handheld sandwiches, while we looked to their local seafood menu to dig in.

Mom Tip: Hale Kai offers a s’more kit, which you can purchase and then take to one of the lawn firepits and make your s’mores for dessert. We saved this treat for our final night and enjoyed indulging in what felt like a Canadian treat under a warm canopy of palm trees and starry skies.
Brown’s Beach House
If you’re looking for fine dining, then it’s time to get dressed up in your Hawaiian vacay outfits and book a reservation at Brown’s Beach House. This is a signature fine dining experience that welcomes you to the shore with live music, beautiful locally sourced food, and, of course, a breathtaking view out over the lagoon. This is a place to slow down, enjoy the company and scenery, and the incredible international dining experience.
Orchid Court – Fairmont Orchid Buffet

The Fairmont Orchid breakfast buffet is a buffet like I’ve never seen before. My camera was “eating first” as I moved through the open buffet, taking photos of all of the tropical fruits, colourful pastries, and hot served classics. From a custom omelette bar to favourites like Eggs Benedict, the Orchid Court is a buffet like no other. Here are a few more pics to showcase just how incredible this was:

Brown’s Deli
The perfect place for a quick bite to eat, Brown’s Deli offers grab-and-go items without the fast food feel. From freshly made to order smoothies and breakfast wraps in the morning, to gourmet sandwiches for lunch, to quick eats and sweets for in between, Brown’s Deli offers artisan goodies that you can grab and go (my personal favourite was the gluten-free banana bread, my kids loved the shaved ice).
Binchotan Bar & Grill
They say that Binchotan is where “Fireside cooking meets modern flair,” and after perusing their menu, I could see why. This Japanese restaurant invites you to gather around a shared platter of seafood, wagyu beef, and seasonal vegetables that are all fire-roasted using traditional robatayaki grilling. This restaurant is on our “next time” list as we didn’t have time to fit it into our schedule, but don’t make the same mistake I did and be sure to add it to your schedule!
Fairmont Orchid Luau
Would you like to take the family to the Luau at the Fairmont Orchid? The Hawai’iloa Lu’au is a luxury beachside experience on the historic Plantation Estate. Not only will you get to experience an incredible Hawaiʻin lūʻau feast, but you’ll get to take in the hula performances, fire knife dancing, and entertainment that can only be found in Hawaiʻi.
We didn’t book a Luau on this trip, so I can’t provide you with an actual Luau review. But from the photos and the Fairmont level of service, I can only imagine that it would be an incredible evening.
Private Dining
Another one on my “next time I visit the Fairmont Orchid list” would be to splurge and book a private dining experience for myself and my husband. Imagine an oceanfront table for two and a romantic sunset with only the finest meal being served. A bucket list item for sure and one that I can’t wait to experience!
Fairmont Orchid Amenities
One thing I think that Fairmont doesn’t do a great job of is showcasing all of the amenities that the property has before your arrival. Maybe that’s intentional, as you’re always getting surprised with unexpected amenities and activities on your trip? Here are some of the amenities I discovered on our recent trip.
Fairmont Orchid Fitness
Fairmont offers a variety of fitness programming and facilities for all fitness levels and interests. I loved their seaside yoga!
Seaside Yoga

As incredible as it sounds, you get to start your day next to the Surf Shack, with yoga mats and towels down on the green grass while you soak in your asana breaths to start the day. There’s nothing like smelling the fresh salty air and hearing the birds chirp while you warm up with deep breathing and get ready for your practice.
Aqua Aerobics
For a more fun pool experience, check out their Aqua Aerobics program. “A fun, upbeat workout designed to improve flexibility, strength, muscle fitness, and cardiovascular endurance while utilizing the resistance of the water. This class is a low-impact total body workout in shallow water.”
Ocean Aerobics
I wish that I had taken part in this class, as there was a big group and it looked like a lot of fun. “Utilizing the resistance of the water, improve flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular endurance, enjoy a fun, unique, total body workout in the shallow water of Pauoa Bay. Class includes cardio, strength, abdominals, legs, and a float or beach meditation.”
Fitness Room
If you’re looking to lead your workout, the Fairmont Orchid has a beautiful state-of-the-art workout facility with exercise equipment and free weights.
Fairmont Orchid Tennis

I have never seen a more robust tennis experience than the courts and club at the Fairmont Orchid. With 10 courts and a 3500-seat stadium court, it is a spectacle just to walk around the courts. There are also 2 pickleball courts (more our family style). Whether you are an avid player or just want to go and check out the tennis scene, it is worth taking the short walk over to the courts to see the facilities. I think it would be neat to watch a game in the stadium there! Also, know that there’s a pro shop on site should you need to pick up supplies or book lessons.
Day Trips and Adventures from Fairmont Orchid
Waioloka Dry Forest Initiative

Hawaiʻi has a dedicated Malama program, which invites you to volunteer while you’re on vacation and let your stay leave a positive impact. We took part in the day of tree planting with the Waioloka Dry Forest Initiative, something that the Fairmont Orchid supports. Our whole family geared up in athletic clothes, brought our water bottles, and worked a hard 3 hours in the sun, hiking into the trails and planting trees. We lost count, but we think that we planted over 200 trees (just our family alone).
This experience enforces our family values and commitment to sustainability, through action and education, and I love that the Fairmont backs this initiative as well. I highly recommend visiting the Waioloka Dry Forest and volunteering during your stay.
25 Things to do on the Big Island in 2025

As action-packed as the Big Island is, I don’t want you to miss any of my adventure recommendations, so I put together a list of 25 Outdoor Adventures & Activities To Explore In 2025. This list includes things like visits to the seahorse farm, giant turtles on black sand beach, and of course a visit to Volcanoes National Park. Check out the article here!

Candid Fairmont Orchid Review

What We Loved
From the spectacular scenery to the luxury amenities, our stay at the Fairmont Orchid was the perfect mixture of rejuvenation, family fun, and soul-serving adventure. From oceanside dinner table conversations, to sunrise canoe and snorkels, to quiet time together on the beach, the Fairmont was the epitome of perfection for what will forever be one of our family’s most cherished holidays.
What We’d Change
The weak Canadian dollar (40%) during our stay meant that for every $100 cost we were charged $140, making things like meals, shopping, and spa experiences significantly more expensive. If there were a way to save as a Canadian, that would be very enticing. After doing some research, there appear to be deals on things like golf packages as well as Fairmont Gold , which is something we’d look at as well.
As a family with allergies, I’d also love to have a few more options for rooms with basic amenities, like a small kitchenette.
And while I wish I could provide more insight on what we’d change, paradise became not just a word but an experience, and our family cherished every moment during our stay.
Overall, if you’re looking for the best place to stay on the beautiful Island of Hawaiʻi, we wholeheartedly recommend the Fairmont Orchid.
