Are you looking for things to do in the Santa Ynez Valley?
Whether you’re a regular to the region or a new visitor like me, there are many adventures to unlock in California’s beautiful Santa Ynez Valley. After learning about Santa Ynez at a recent conference, I knew I had to visit and explore the slower side of California. This year-round destination is comprised of six smaller regions that showcase small towns where you can explore Old World, Old West, Victorian-era, mid-century, and modern Danish. Upon arriving in Solvang (The Danish Capital of America) I was running around the streets, photographing the storefront architecture and wondering if I had been transported to Denmark itself! The uniqueness of Solvang and the culture around the town created the perfect basecamp for our Santa Ynez adventures.
The region has a reputation for its wine culture, with world-class wines and over 100 wineries in the area. But if you’re a regular reader, you’ll know that I don’t drink, so I sought out adventures outside of the vineyards. This took us into small towns like Los Olivos and took us up into the hills, where we got to explore above the skyline on horseback and ziplining.
So if you’re looking for adventure-infused activities in the Santa Ynez Valley, this 2025 guide will help you plan your next visit.
Where Is The Santa Ynez Valley
The Santa Ynez Valley is located approximately two hours north of Los Angeles, four hours south of San Francisco, and a 40-minute drive from Santa Barabara Municipal Airport. The region is made up of six small towns including Ballard, Buellton, Los Alamos, Los Olivos, Santa Ynez, and my favourite, Solvang.
Things To Do In The Santa Ynez Valley
Basecamp – Solvang
Solvang is the perfect place to base yourself for your Santa Ynez Valley as it is centrally located in the region and has a lot of amenities in town that visitors enjoy. Solvang is known as The Danish Capital of America and was established in 1911 by Danish immigrants. Today’s visitors can enjoy authentic Danish architecture, including four larer-than-life wooden windmills, traditional architecture, thatched roofs, and craftsmanship that makes you feel like you’re wandering the streets of Europe.
Traveler Tip: If you are interested in visiting during the holiday season, Solvang was named “one of the most Christmassy Towns in America” by Time Magazine!
Where To Stay in Solvang
Newly renovated, The Landsby is a boutique hotel in the heart of Solvang. With 41 modern and updated rooms, this hotel has a unique personality that meets at the intersection of funky Llama and award-winning interior design.
As soon as you wheel your bag down the teal ornate floors and open your door to unveil your sleek canopy bed, you’ll know you’re somewhere special. The guest experience is clearly the focus of hotel staff, as we were greeted by every staff member with joy and welcome, as well as a kind connection to ensure we were having a good stay.
This hotel felt like a home away from home (only cleaner, nicer, and better decorated) which is the perfect recipe when on vacation. I really can’t say enough good things about our experience at The Landsby!
Book your stay at The Landsby here!
Tour The Town Of Solvang
After you’ve settled into your hotel, put on your walking shoes and head out to the streets of Solvang to explore the shops, restaurants, and of course bakeries.
Each storefront is unique, from the building architecture to the elaborate window displays.
Be sure to check out the “chefs” at the Danish bakery or the bunnies in the windows at The Solvang Bakery.
Our only regret on our trip was that we didn’t allow ourselves enough time to wander through all of the streets and peek into each shop. There was so much to do which means we have the best problem of all, we need to go back!
Photography Tip: If you’re looking for the best photos of Solvang head out for the golden hour in the morning. The streets will be empty (aka less photoshop required) and you’ll be able to enjoy a beautiful sunrise as the town slowly wakes up.
Visit the Danish Mill Bakery
A trip to The Danish Capital of America wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Danish Mill Bakery. The Danish Mill Bakery has the astute recognition of being the only Danish bakery outside of Denmark that is a member of the BKD organization (Danish Bakers & Confectionery Chefs in Denmark). We had a private tour with Henrick Gram, the Head Danish Pastry Chef who has been working as a baker for more than 40 years.
Henrick took us behind the scenes and shared the stories, photos, and samples (so many delicious samples, some days I can’t believe that this is my job!). Henrick taught us about the science of baking and the artistry that is important to producing a final product of the highest quality. It was clear that even after 40 years of being a Pastry Chef, Henrick gives each sweet treat the dedication and passion as if he was personally presenting each pastry to a guest.

Santa Ynez Adventures
Go Horseback Riding at Vino Vaqueros
For over 15 years, Jane Ganibi has been welcoming guests for horseback rides at Vino Vaqueros, which translates to “Wine Cowboy”. So we were excited to embrace the cowgirl experience and joined Jane at Estelle Ranch and Vineyards to take part in a 90-minute guided ride.
I’ve always had a respectful nervousness around horses, but when we walked up to the stables and saw this silly guy sticking his tongue out I was quickly reminded that these horses are here for a good time.
Once we finished our safety briefing and learning some basic skills, we saddled up, climbed on and were out on our way to the trails. My horse was a steady steed and he loved playing following the leader. Jane took us through beautiful California vineyards, up through oak trees, along the crest of the hills, and finally to a scenic outlook that overlooked the whole valley.
It was a great way to visit the vineyard and if you’re looking to put the vino into the cowboy they do offer a post-ride wine tasting in their brand-new barn and event space!

Ziplining at Highline Adventures
The Santa Ynez Valley is just that, a valley, so imagine soaring high above the canopy on the longest and fastest zipline in California. Highline Adventures is located just outside of Buellton and welcomes you to explore the sky on their 1,200-acre ranch.
Our adventure started in an army-grade 4×4 Humvee, which had us crawling up the side of the mountain looking out for local wildlife along the way (our guides said they regularly see mountain lions on these trails!).
Up top we were strapped in, had several safety checks, and then were on our way, zipping through the sky on a series of tandem ziplines. The longest one was 3,360 feet and 1000 feet above the ground!
After you complete the 3-line course you can head onto their on-site aerial ropes course that has 85 different elements to challenge yourself physically and mentally as you make your way climbing, crawling, swinging, and hanging from suspended obstacles.

Explore Downtown Los Olivos
Driving into downtown Los Olivos was one of the most unique experiences as in the middle of the town’s main intersection is a huge flag pole! (check out a TikTok video I made of me going through this intersection.) So it’s half four-way stop, half roundabout as cars make their way around the flag pole. Something unique that can only happen in a small town like Los Olivos.
Once you’ve parked your car, wander the picturesque streets that feel like they would be the perfect backdrop for a Hallmark movie. The Victorian-style architecture combined with the small-town vibes invite you to come and explore the locally owned boutiques. If you’re like me and love the arts there are a variety of galleries to also peruse many of which are showcasing local Los Olivos’ artisans.
One absolute must-see is the Los Olivos General Store. Their local farm-style decor, combined with locally made products and friendly “welcome to the neighbourhood” vibes, had us browsing like the locals.
Farm Tour at Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Cafe Farm
If you are passionate about the farm-to-table movement, book a farm tour at the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Cafe Farm. We were fortunate to have Shawnda Marmorstein walk us through the rows of tomatoes, broccoli, lettuce, and fresh flowers on the farm and share the stories about the evolution of the farm and how the ingredients go from their farm to their restaurant. The farm is located only only mile from the restaurant so it’s really neat to go from the farm to the table for your meal. I noticed that the Chef herself went around and greeted each table and was personable and passionate about sharing her stories, with a flair or cool vibes. I highly recommend the gluten-free pizza, it was delicious!

Lunch – Where To Have Lunch In Santa Ynez Valley
Bob’s Well Bread Bakery
Owner Bob Oswaks, of Bob’s Well Bread Bakery, was behind the register, greeting each customer and helping coordinate service to move through the busy line. A landmark in the Santa Ynez Valley, Bob has perfected (although he’d never say that) the art of baking and produces incredible hand-made products using the finest local ingredients and natural starters. No added preservatives can be found in their items and they use natural fermentation methods. By using old-world European traditions and techniques, the care they take shines through in the bakery and cafe items they serve customers.
From Showbiz to Doughbiz
When Bob had a break in customers, he graciously came over to our table to sit and break bread with us. Bob shared his story about how he spent 35 years in the TV business and was the former president of worldwide marketing for Sony Pictures. After a career transition, he decided to follow his passion for bread making starting with experimenting in his wood-fired oven in his backyard. From there he started taking courses, one week at a time in San Francisco, perfecting his craft and working with a local entrepreneur to craft a business plan. He and his wife moved from LA to the Santa Ynez Valley and in 2012 Bob opened his first location in Los Alamos and in 2020 he opened their second.
Friends who know him from his past life say he went from, “Showbiz to Doughbiz” and I have to say, his passion for his new life is inspiring. I enjoyed his energy, his storytelling, and his love for serving visitors and his local community. Plus, their GF avocado toast is mouthwatering!

Dinner – Where to Have Dinner In Santa Ynez Valley
Industrial Eats
On our first night in Solvang, we were invited to take a 10-minute drive out of Solvang to a place called Industrial Eats in Buellton. I was a little confused as to why we were heading out of the restaurant-infused streets of Solvang, but that wonder quickly dissolved as we walked through the doors of Industrial Eats.
One popular travel mantra is “eat where the locals eat” and Industrial Eats was the perfect example of this. We were clearly the only tourists in the area, as you could see people stopping by after work for a meal and families coming for a Friday night treat. Industrial Eats focuses on locally sourced food and has one of the biggest menus I’ve ever seen, serving everything from pizza to pulled pork, to patés and cheeses. The pulled pork I had was seriously so mouth-watering that I regularly referred back to it for the rest of our California road trip and it was hands down the best meal of our whole week. I will be going back!
While the food is incredible, the ambiance is a touch of local magic as well. Owners Janet and Jeff Olsson have created energy, with high-top tables, menus handwritten on brown parchment paper, and wood fire ovens as the cornerstone in the kitchen. Ambiance + Great food = Mouthwatering memorable experience.

Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Cafe Farm
For a fancier affair check out Los Olivos Wine Merchant and Cafe. After visiting the farm for a tour, it was neat to see the farm-to-table offerings and dine in the beautiful streetside restaurant. Their menu is extensive and it was difficult to choose what to order but I finally settled on their gluten-free pizza, which was delicious. Erin had a heirloom tomato and burrata salad, with the tomatoes having just been picked that morning at their farm.
With a seasonal menu with items like Seared Ahi Tostadas, “Café Farm Korean pickled radish, onion & jalapeños, avocado, scallions, cilantro, fresh jalapeno, wasabi crema, crispy corn tortillas” it’s the perfect place for both locals and visitors to enjoy a quality meal and some Los Olivos hospitality.

Overall, the Santa Ynez Valley is known for its wine, but it was incredible to see all of the other adventures that were waiting to be explored on our visit. We fell in love with Solvang, loved soaring through the trees, and settled into some classic meals that left a memory the only way that amazing food can. So be sure to get outside the vineyard on your first (or next) trip to the Santa Ynez Valley region.
