Family Reunions in Banff & Lake Louise

boathouse on lake louise

A world-renowned destination, hosting a family reunion in Banff and Lake Louise will allow you to choose from a variety of accommodation providers, large group activities, and, of course, adventures! And with picture-perfect backdrops around every corner, it would be worth suggesting that you hire a professional photographer to capture your family reunion.

An epicentre for adventure, Banff and Lake Louise have something for everyone in the family. If your family members are outdoor enthusiasts, you could look at booking oTENTiks or group camping sites and then take part in a variety of outdoor activities, including biking, hiking, paddling, horseback riding, and picnics. If you’re wanting a more luxurious experience, your family can settle into one of the mountain-side hotels and indulge in luxury foods and a slower-paced environment, taking time to enjoy spas and poolside time. Banff and Lake Louise are great for hosting family reunions year-round, as there is just as much to do in the winter as there is in the summer.

Savings Tip: Book during shoulder seasons for better discounts.

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

entrance-to-fairmont-chateau-lake-louise

One of my favourite hotels on the planet (and I’ve visited a lot of hotels as a professional travel writer), the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise meets at the intersection of stunning Canadian scenery and unparalleled luxury. Situated on the shore of the turquoise Lake Louise, you can see visitors from around the world flocking to the water’s edge, each “ooo’ing” and “awe’ing” in their language. A postcard, a picture-perfect moment, you feel proud to be Canadian, visiting this historical hotel. For those looking for luxury and carefully crafted activities, this is the hotel for you. From paddling a red canoe across the turquoise lake, to taking one of their guided hikes to the tea houses, to enjoying afternoon tea while you look out over the lake, there’s lots to explore with the family.

An iconic Canadian hotel nestled into the forest looking down over the town of Banff, the Fairmont Banff Springs has been welcoming families since 1888! This luxury property is for those looking to be outside of the hustle and bustle of downtown Banff, but still want to be able to take the bus into town and enjoy the activities at their leisure. While on property, guests will be well taken care of as the resort’s activities team plans hands-on, high-quality events and experiences like indoor arts and crafts, guided hiking excursions, wildlife tours, and fires under the stars. If you’re wanting to make your event planning easier, they can also coordinate private experiences such as group trips to Lake Louise and Lake Moraine, ebiking, and a wildlife corridor tour. One that stood out for me is their Fire & Falls: Stories Around the Campfire – Fairmont Banff Springs. For groups of 10, the Fairmont can host your group in their famous 360 Dome!

Something new to the Banff Fairmont Springs is the family-designed rooms in the Gatehouse. Reimagined with a focus on family, these modern and spacious accommodations are specifically designed for multi-generational travellers. With bunk beds for the kids, large room layouts, cozy corners to cuddle up in, and a great location, these are rooms you need to check out.

And for the golfers in the family, there is not one, but two golf courses to choose from. There is the 18-hole Stanley Thompson Course and the 9-Hole Tunnel Mountain Course. If you’re looking for a luxury stay in Banff, this is it!

lake with mountains in canmore alberta

A vibrant village nestled into the mountainside makes Canmore a great place for a family reunion. While they boast about all of the incredible outdoor adventures to explore, including helicopter tours, river rafting, family-friendly hiking, and biking, they also have a plethora of unique experiences like the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary. A great family outing where you get to learn about this unique species that is part wolf and part dog. If your family loves dogs and is visiting in the winter, you can take a dog sledding tour or get pulled by horses on a sleigh ride. With a bustling arts scene, incredible food, and a smaller community vibe, don’t make the same mistake I’ve made and drive by Canmore. Plan a whole family escape to this beautiful town!

I wanted to give a special shout-out to the team at Explore Canmore, who were very supportive of my research for this article and sent over some great resources to support you in your family reunion planning. Check out these great articles:

Waterton Lakes National Park

family-at-bears-hump-hike

It was 2015, and it was the first time I had ever taken my kids on a solo parent road trip. 3 days and 1200 km later, we had arrived at Waterton Lakes National Park, and she was even more beautiful than all of the pictures I had researched combined. A unique National Park that spans the border into the US, Waterton Lakes has a striking landscape and unique geology that is worthy of being a family road trip and reunion destination.

For adventure seekers there are two “not to be missed” activities from my perspective that include a challenging but worthwhile hike up Bear’s Hump (pictured above). This is one of my cherished memories with the kids as they pushed through the 225 m elevation gain to unveil the incredible view up top. Another is Red Rock Canyon, where a deep, earth-red canyon is a geological sight to see. To list all of the things to do in Waterton Lakes would take a whole article in itself but some other things not to miss include afternoon tea at the Prince of Wales, an “international cruise” with Waterton Shoreline Cruise Co, a visit to the Waterton Planetarium,  and visits to Cameron Falls, Cameron Lake, and Blakiston Falls. The last thing I recommend you do is the drive-through loop in the Bison Paddock… we loved spotting these ancestral beasts and seeing them roam free.
